Kindness Challenges in the Classroom

The key to a happy classroom is kindness. It is arguably the most important thing we can teach our students. Kindness challenges are a powerful tool for teaching and reinforcing kindness in the classroom.

I believe in the power of kindness so much that I kick off my first 2 weeks of school with a kindness challenge!

But first, let’s take a look at why kindness in the classroom is so vital.

Why Kindness Challenges in the Classroom Work

Studies show that both giving and receiving acts of kindness help students grow into well-rounded individuals. The best way for students to learn how to show kindness is to experience the feeling they get when others show them kindness. Expert in neuroscience in education, Patty O’Grady, explains this by saying,

Kindness changes the brain by the experience of kindness. Children and adolescents do not learn kindness by only thinking about it and talking about it. Kindness is best learned by feeling it so that they can reproduce it.

Patty O’Grady

To give students the opportunity to experience kindness, we must promote it within our classrooms. Kindness challenges are an engaging way to do just that!

How Kindness Challenges Work

A kindness challenge is a given set of kind acts to be completed with in a certain time frame. They should be tasks that all students have the ability to complete if they have the desire to do so. For example, “Help clean up the classroom.” or “Say something nice to a friend.” They can be themed or completely random. They can last a day, a week, a month, or all year!

Take the Prep Work Out!

I have a super simple way for you to implement kindness challenges in your classroom without any prep on your end! Students can complete these monthly color-by-code challenges independently. They can track each act on their own by coloring the kind act that they completed using the color by code key. Check it out:

Love this idea. I had my students do a kindness card during our SEL lessons when I first started teaching in the behavior self contained classroom.
